Urgent help

Who to contact for support

Talking Change is not an emergency mental health service for people in crisis. Support is available from specialist services if you need urgent help.

If you are thinking about harming yourself or you are having suicidal thoughts, you may need to be seen by the Crisis Team:

Please contact your GP to make an emergency appointment

(during out of hours, call 111 or visit 111 online)

Staying Safe provides free resources, and Grassroots offers a free Stay Alive app, for anyone distressed, thinking about suicide or worried about someone they care about.

If your life is in danger

If you have seriously harmed yourself:

Please immediately call 999 for an ambulance or go straight to A&E.

Messages of hope

It’s common to experience suicidal thoughts at some point in our lives. Here are some messages of hope from people who have suffered and found the courage to keep going.

“Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle.”

— Christian Larson

“Never give up, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn.”

— Harriet Stowe

“But in the end one needs more courage to live.”

— Albert Camus

“You are learning to be fearless and becoming who you were always meant to be.”

— Marie White

“One of the secrets of life is to make stepping stones out of stumbling blocks.”

— Jack Penn

“Look at how a single candle can both defy and define the darkness.”

— Anne Frank
